Analysts' statistics underscore the boom in workplace IM. In a recent survey by Nemertes Research, 73 percent of organizations said they've either already implemented IM or plan to do so within the next 12 to 18 months.



Ferris Research, moreover, estimates that IM in the enterprise will mushroom from 10 million users in mid-2002 to 180 million by 2007. Even more bullishly, the Radicati Group expects the number of corporate IM accounts to explode from 60 million in 2003 to 350 million by 2007.



Over the same time frame, Radicati anticipates the gap between consumer and corporate IM will narrow substantially. In 2003, 52 billion corporate IMs will be sent worldwide on a daily basis, compared to 530 billion consumer IMs. By 2007, the numbers will rise to 290 billion for corporate IMs and 1.09 trillion for consumer IMs, according to the analyst group.



The number of worldwide corporate instant messaging users will increase at a compound annual growth rate of (CAGR) of 140% and will exceed 180 million in 2004. For worldwide corporate and consumer segments, the total number of messages sent will approach 2 trillion by 2004.

Free IM services will be found in 70 percent of enterprises by 2003, and will be implemented by end-users without IT organization sanction or support.

The rapid proliferation of IM use has resulted in individuals employing a vital communication medium without forethought. e-mail followed a similar implementation pattern. It took more than 10 years before enterprises recognized and effectively addressed problems of security, reliability and business policy. Enterprises must pay attention to IM usage now, lest they repeat the painful lessons taught by e-mail.



A survey undertaken by the Radicati Group predicts the enterprise instant messaging market to balloon during the next five years, to 349 million users of IM in companies. That's a dramatic increase from the 60 million IM users in the workplace that the Palo Alto, Calif. researchers count at the present day.



At the Yankee Group, Paul Ritter estimates the current number of employees in U.S. business using IM at about 25 million. With a compound annual growth rate of about 150 percent over the next three years, Yankee Group is expecting to see a modest 84 million business IM users by 2006.



"The viral effects of IM utilization will be one of the factors driving growth, and the impact of companies like Reuters, who are essentially giving away IM, will also be a factor," said Ritter, who is program manager of the firm's Internet Business Strategies group.
